Why Are Military Watches Important?

The main function of military watches is to show the time just like any other watch.

So what is so special about them? Why must we invest in them? Well, the attributes of the military watches go way beyond showcasing of the time.

Are you lost in the woods with no map, no guide and no mobile to lead you out? A military watch with a digital compass, altimeter or GPS will help you to find your way out easily.

Want to talk to your friend who lives in a different time zone but are not sure about the time in their country or what they are doing at the moment? Military watches today can be set at more than 30 time zones which will help you figure out the time of various countries in no time.

Moreover, do you want to know about the weather but are too lazy to sit throughout the weather forecasting on the news? You can know about the weather by just looking at your military watch.

Military watches are mostly required for outdoorsman-ship.

Your normal watches will not be able to withstand extreme and severe conditions where as the military watches will easily cope up with these situations.

The military watches are best suitable for mountaineering, trekking, swimming, scuba diving, military or law enforcement purposes and other similar activities.

However, these are also gaining much popularity as watches of everyday use as well.

Military watches are generally of sporty and rugged looks.

However, today you can find military watches, such as Suunto X-Lander Military or Casio Men’s PRW-3000-1ACR “Protek” with classy and elegant looks to go with a formal event.

Military watches are compact with so many features and functions.

They are versatile as well as durable.

In my opinion, these beauties are a must investment.

How To Choose Military Watches?

There are numerous aspects which you must keep in consideration before purchasing a military watch.

The military watch must fulfill your need and satisfy your desire.

You do not want to regret paying for a military watch.

So before rushing off to buy a watch from your nearest store or even ordering a military watch online, spare five minutes to go through the following factors which you should consider before buying a military watch.

Battery And Battery Life

The first factor to reflect on before buying a military watch is the battery and the battery life.

Most of the military watches have solar rechargeable batteries.

These run for approximately 6 months to 10 months without any exposure to sunlight.

They can be recharged easily and hence are the better option to opt for.

The other batteries such as CR2032 cannot be recharged as easily.

Some watches give you the option to replace the drained battery with a new one.

Choose a military watch with rechargeable or replaceable batteries and long battery life.

Features And Functions

The elementary features of a military watch include alarms, countdown timer, stopwatch etcetera.

However, the game has been lifted higher up and you can find military watches with features such as compass and GPS for navigation, altimeter to depict the height, barometer and thermometer to know about the weather and so on.

They also have sunrise and sunset time, and speed indicators.

They can be set as per various time zones at the same time.

More advanced features in military watches include storm alarm which will warn the users about pressure changes and depth meter which helps to track down the dive’s depth below the water surface.

You want to choose a military watch which has the features and functions which you require.

Design

Military watches generally have shock resistant design which make them suitable to wear in extreme conditions.

These are either sporty looking such as the Casio Rangeman GW9400-3 or elegant and modish such as the Suunto Core Military.

Go for the design which appeals to you the best.

Water Resistant

Almost all of the military watches are water resistant.

The normal water resistance of these watches ranges from 30mm to 200mm.

Most of the military watches are around 100mm water resistant; you can wear these military watches while swimming.

The other ones which are water resistant to 200mm can be worn even while scuba diving.

Durability

Military watches must be able to withstand severe and harsh conditions.

They are generally made up of titanium, resin with leather or nylon bezels.

If the glass of these watches are able to endure drops or falls and are anti-scratch in properties, these are good investments.

  1. Very good article. My watch is about a thousand years old and I’m looking for a modern replacement. Thanks for all of this great information!

  2. I am currently wearing a classic TIMEX Ironman watch, which I like, but after reading your review of the Casio Men’s GW-9400-1CR “Master of G” Stainless Steel Solar Watch, I’m thinking of picking up one of these. I’m really rough on watches and like the protective mineral crystal window of the GW-9400-1CR. The solar powered battery is also a highly desirable feature.

  3. Although some people think that military watches are an old fashion ( military watches were first made in the 20th century, as the article stated), I love them, and i found it so fancy and useful. Its not just a watch, its a powerful watch, having so many features and uses. I have a woman military watch that has a GPS and is waterproof, I use it for adventures especially for hiking. Also I really liked the watches stated above in the article, I loved the Casio Men’s GA100SD-8A “G-Shock Military” Watch, it looks awesome especially the world time function feature, i feel like it’s so useful. I hope I could find the same one but women version! thanks for sharing this article, and I’m looking forward for any articles discussing women military watches!

  6. I have been a collector of military and military-style watches for over 20 years. My personal favorite military-style watch is the Timex Expedition, of which I own several versions. The Expeditions are tough and reliable watches that are also stylish compared to actual military watches, which are not really designed with style in mind. However, Casio makes some of the best watches in the world.

  7. Well written article, just what I needed because I’m looking for a replacement for my old watch. The Suunto X-Lander Military watch seems like a good deal! Looking forward to my new watch.

  11. Very informative! I was unaware of the benefits in all honesty before. I’d love to see more of this kind of thing on the modern market. I also found the inexpensiveness of many of these very surprising, in a good sense of course.

  12. So I sold G-shock watched at Macy’s for many years and have about 3-4 Casio/ G-Shock watches my self. I can vouch for their toughness and durability. I had a biking accident where I landed on my g-shock face first and was still working fine. Mine collections has the basic functions but the Casio Rangeman GW9400-3 is top of the heap. I’d recommend that model for any serious outdoors man.

  13. I’ve been looking for a new watch as my old one is pretty old, This list has made my decision much easier, Thank you so much! I cannot wait until mine arrives.

  14. I had no idea how useful military watches are. I travel and hike in my spare time and now I am considering purchasing a watch because I often find myself lost in the woods without a compass. I think I would choose the first watch simply because of battery charge – that’s one large battery and solar is amazing.

  15. Pretty cool to learn about the history of military watches. My dad actually got me one as a present and I was a little disappointed to find that my watch was not on the list of recommended watches haha. I’ll have to keep an eye out and see if I can find any of these recommended watches on sale, my son could use one since his watches always seem to break on him!

  16. Very nice. Love how they are coming up with new idea’s, The battery is solar rechargeable. It will last 6 months without any exposure to sunlight. Nice on the breakdown on details, like The Night Vision INFANTRY Mens Military Army Support is a robust and durable watch.
